Abstract

Dioxin contamination associated with war has been studied through separate bodies of evidence: military records, spraying and logistics data, environmental measurements, toxicological research, medical observations, and later health statistics. Today, these previously fragmented sources can be brought together within a common analytical framework.

This contribution proposes a new research direction for reconstructing the pathway of wartime dioxin contamination: from source, storage, transport, release, and spatial distribution of toxic compounds, through environmental persistence and exposure pathways, to long-term biological and health consequences observed decades later.

The Vietnam case is especially important because archival material may become available for analysis, while environmental, toxicological, medical, spatial, and demographic evidence has accumulated over many decades. Contemporary methods of digitization, multilingual information processing, provenance control, spatial reconstruction, data integration, and artificial-intelligence-assisted analysis make it possible to examine these materials at a previously unattainable level.

The objective is not simply to digitize historical archives, but to reconstruct meaningful chains of evidence linking wartime contamination with long-term environmental and biological outcomes. Such work may improve understanding of persistent dioxin exposure, identify areas and populations requiring further investigation, and support remediation, health research, and long-term recovery policy.
